October 1, 1969: The Beatles last album, Abbey Road is released.

October 3, 1901: The Victor Talking Machine Company is formed. Later, it will become RCA/Victor after a company merger.

October 4, 1970: Janis Joplin dies of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 in Hollywood, CA.

October 5, 1962: In Great Britain The Beatles release their 1st record,”Love Me Do” (Parlophone). It goes to #17 on the British charts. Beatlemania is 6 months away.

October 12, 1978:  Nancy Spungeon is found stabbed to death in the bathroom of the apartment she shared with boyfriend, the Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious. He’s charged the next day with her murder.

October 15, 1969: Led Zeppelin performs on stage for the 1st time.

October 20, 1977:  Lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt, guitarist Steve Gaines, and singer Cassie Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd perish in a plane crash while on tour in Mississippi.

October 25, 1964: The Rolling Stones make their 1st appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

October 26, 1961: Bob Dylan signs with Columbia Records.

October 27, 1975:  Bruce Springsteen is on the cover of both Time and Newsweek. Both mags use Springsteen as an example of how the music industry publicity machine can create a rock star, regardless of talent. The resulting publicity makes Bruce’s career take off.
